Chapter Seven

SHANNON STUFFED another pillow behind Rick’s back. Satisfied he was comfortable lying on her couch, she pulled the TV remote, a book and a huge plastic mug of soda within his grasp on the coffee table.

She straightened. “There. Think you’ll survive until I get home tonight?”

“I’ll be fine.”

She fussed with her blouse collar, reluctant to leave him. Strangely, as Fletch had helped her get Rick settled in her house, she’d felt none of the dread she’d expected to feel as she placed his toothbrush beside hers, and put his clothes away in the spare bedroom.

Instead, she felt a bubbling anticipation. Having his masculine presence in her house constantly would be... thrilling. Exciting.

Temporary.

That thought reassured her. It was all temporary. She could enjoy Rick’s company for a couple of weeks, maybe even find herself getting tired of him. Then he’d move out, and she’d move on. She’d have her delicious memories to carry with her for the rest of her life. Her proper life. Her upstanding, proper life. Her boring, upstanding, proper life.

She frowned. She had to stop using that word. It only depressed her. Just because she was going to fulfill her parents’ dream of marrying a good, pious man didn’t necessarily mean he’d bore her. He might not excite her like Rick did, but that was a good thing. She’d shorten her life span considerably if she married a man who affected her like Rick affected her. Her heart would probably wear out before she turned fifty.

“What’s the matter, angel?” Rick asked her. “You having second thoughts?”

Shannon shook her head, biting down on her lower lip. “No. I’m glad you’re here.”

His eyebrows shot up. “You are?”

She nodded, then grinned impishly. “I like having you helpless and in my care.”

One side of his mouth lifted, revealing a slight dimple in his cheek she’d never noticed before. “Should I be shaking in my sling?”

She leaned over him, the devil in her rearing up. “Only if you don’t obey my every command.”

His good hand came up to caress her neck, his thumb tracing her jaw. “I’ll be a good boy, I promise.”

“I don’t want you to be a good boy,” she murmured, her eyes fluttering closed as she gave into the pressure of his hand to lower her lips to his.

Rick kissed her, just a light, feather stroke of his lips against hers. Shannon sighed, savoring his tenderness. She knew he’d turn that tender touch into a ravishing assault that made her senses reel, with just a sign from her.

Unfortunately, he was in no condition to assault her senses. Besides, she needed to get back to work. Reluctantly, she broke the kiss, but only raised her head an inch or so. She opened her eyes and drank in his harsh features. “You’re a beautiful man, Rick,” she whispered.

His knuckles froze on her cheek. “You think so?”

“Oh, yes.”

“Long hair and all?”

“Long hair and all.”

“Shannon?”

“Yes?”

“Do you realize your blood is coursing in my veins?”

“Yes,” she whispered.

“That makes you a part of me.”

Shannon was
